Interchange - October 2022
Good Morning,
Our next Interchange sessions are the first week of January. A whole new year(hardly seems possible)! Attached is an article that is actually an excerpt from our book(we just finished the second draft). It’s only 2 pages long so take some time over the break and read it. It is actually more focused on you, and your goals, so is an appropriate subject of introspection to prep for the new year. Here is the executive briefing:
Your primary job as a CEO is to engage with your team, to ensure every employee is personally committed to serving their customers. This defines engagement. Having people on your team who lack that commitment is like a professional football team with players that don’t like football…but hang around for the paycheck. Doing that job; ensuring that people are engaged, requires a number of capacities and skills:
Speaking and acting in ways that inspire others to engage.
Holding people accountable in a way that they see as supportive.
Being the example of integrity for others, always doing what you say you will.
Evoking a request for coaching from people.
Having “difficult conversations” with people.
Developing and nurturing those behaviors in yourself requires conscious and deliberate thought, and action and emotional control. All of which requires a high level of energy. We are all aware that time management is a key skill, but even more important is energy management. One of the keys to personal growth is managing, actually optimizing your energy.
So, the questions that we suggest you think about, and come prepared to discuss are:
Given your goals for the organization in 2023, what skills or capacities are you personally focused on?
To what extent are you consciously managing your energy?
a. Are you consciously selecting food that contributes to your health and energy? What could you do?
b. Are you using exercise to energize yourself? What could you do?
c. Are you consciously managing your sleep habits? What could you do?
d. How do your relationships contribute to your overall wellbeing and energy?
i. Social relationships
ii. Intimate relationships?
e. What could you do to foster such relationships?
f. What practices do you, or could you, engage in regularly(daily?) to nurture your personal commitment to a higher purpose?
We look forward to seeing you in The New Year. And send prayers for a loving experience of the Holidays for you and your family.
With Gratitude and Respect, I look forward to hearing from you,
Brad

Good afternoon!
I hope you are enjoying the Fall weather as much as we are in Michigan. It’s my personal favorite time of the year.
As a reminder, in our last Interchange we discussed an article from McKinsey about attracting people to work in your organization.
This month we want to continue in that vein, thinking about your workforce issues. How do you retain and keep your staff healthy? How do you lead through all the burnout that people are feeling? This will serve as a good follow up conversation to the article on our blog: ARE WE FATIGUED, EXHAUSTED OR JUST TIRED? If you did not have a chance to read it, please do prior to our time next week.
In addition to the article, here is a quick video to get your wheels turning: Workforce Burnout | The-Culture-Experts (phoenixperform.com)
Please come prepared to discuss these three questions:
What in your organizational culture is contributing to people drifting towards fatigue, exhaustion, or burnout?
How might you help address those contributing factors? How can you bolster your employee’s resilience?
As a CEO, you are always leading by example. What example are you setting? How have you learned to deal with your own exhaustion?
